The back of this card reads: Detail from a painting by Raphael Santi (1483-1520) Raphael was the son of Giovanni Santi and Magia di Battista Ciarla; his mother died in 1491. Raphael's father was a painter and gave Raphael his first instruction and guidance before his death in 1494. The 'Madonna Sistina' was painted by Raphael for Pope Julius II as a present to the city of Piazenza.
