The back of this card reads: The Luncheon of the Boating Party by Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919) / Corbis

Impressionist artist, born in Limoges, C France. He first painted procelain and fans, began to paint in the open air c. 1864 and from 1870 obtained several comissions for portraits. He exhibited witht the Impressionists (1874-9, 1887). His picture of sunlight filtering through leaves - Le Moulin de lat Galette (1876, Louvre) - epitomizes his colourful, happy art. His visit to Italy in 1880 was followed by a series of "Bathers" in a more cold and Classical style. He then returned to reds, orange, and gold to portray nudes in sunlight, a style which he continued to develop until his death.
